Play for Real Money at Legal Online Casinos in New Jersey

Online gambling became legal in New Jersey in 2013. Casinos based in Atlantic City are able to offer a full range of real money games to players in the state who are over the age of 21.

You can play at these online casinos as long as you are physically within the state of New Jersey. You don’t have to be a resident of the state to play, though you will have to be there when you create the account and any time you log in.

Is it Safe to Gamble at New Jersey’s Online Casinos?

The online casinos based in New Jersey are completely safe.

Online gaming in New Jersey is regulated by the state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement and the Casino Control Commission. These are the same state agencies that regulate the “brick and mortar” casinos in Atlantic City.

To operate an online casino in Atlantic City, you need to pay a $400,000 licensing fee and also own a tangible land-based casino located within the state. This means that shady fly-by-night gaming operators cannot legally offer online wagering in New Jersey. If an online casino claims to be in the state but is not clearly affiliated with one of the Atlantic City casinos, it is not a legitimate operation.

Overseas casinos that are well-regulated by their local governments are usually forbidden from accepting players from the United States as a term of that regulation. That leaves you with casinos in countries where they are not regulated properly. Your money might take months to pay out, or you might never see it again. You also can’t guarantee the games are completely fair, and you’ll have to worry about your bank potentially blocking transactions or flagging your account for suspicious activity.

You won’t encounter these problems with New Jersey’s online casinos. You don’t face the same issues with deposits and withdrawals that you encounter when trying to play at overseas casinos. The state also tests games to ensure they are fair, and will intervene when players bring legitimate disputes.

If you aren’t sure whether a New Jersey online casino is legitimate or not, check to see if it is on the list of authorized sites at the state Office of the Attorney General website. This page lists all of the legitimate, registered online casinos in New Jersey at present.

New Jersey Casino Deposit and Withdrawal Methods

All of New Jersey’s online casinos accept credit and debit cards as a funding method, and most of them accept a wide variety of alternatives such as PayPal, Neteller, Skrill, prepaid credit cards and direct bank transfers. Your bank will not block these transfers so long as you initiate them from within the state, but if you prefer you can also visit the physical casino locations and make withdrawals and deposits to your online account at their cashier cage.

The Advantages of Online Gambling

Convenience and comfort are the main advantages of playing online. It’s as simple as firing up your computer or mobile device any time you like. There is always a seat available at your favorite game, and you can always play the stakes that you prefer. You don’t have to go hunt and peck around casino floors to find an open seat at the game you want.

You also save quite a bit of money. At the very least, you have to pay for transportation to and from a land-based casino. If you don’t live near Atlantic City, you’re also looking at paying for a hotel room. Unlike Las Vegas, Atlantic City has a fairly limited stock of hotel rooms and can get very expensive during periods of high demand (weekends and summer). Add in tips, meals and drinks and you’re saving an awful lot by playing from the comfort of your own home.

You also control the environment. Maybe you’re a table game player who wants to smoke, but all the open tables are non-smoking. Or you’re a slots fan who doesn’t smoke, but your favorite machines are always in the smoking area of the casino floor. You can always find the game you want online and play it however you like. You can even mix your own drinks for about what it would cost to tip the cocktail waitress, and you don’t have to deal with expensive casino food.

Account funding is another big advantage of online play. You’ll never find a machine on a casino floor that takes credit cards. You’re free to fund your online account with a credit card payment if you choose to, however.

Finally, the odds and bonuses tend to be better. Online operations don’t have all of the overhead to cover that offline casinos do. That translates into cost savings, which can get passed on to the player in the form of more generous odds and better special offers.

Benefits That Go Beyond Your Device

Since New Jersey’s online casinos have to be tied to a land-based property in Atlantic City, you enjoy great flexibility in how you can use your comps. With most online casinos, comps are restricted to things like cash-back offers, since they have no physical locations. The comps you earn at New Jersey online casinos can be cashed in at many of the properties, however, and sometimes even at properties outside of New Jersey.

For example, your online play at Caesars Casino Online and Harrah’s Online Casino feeds into the Total Rewards program. This earns you comps that can be spent like real money at any Caesars property in North America, as well as tier points that lead to their own valuable rewards as you move up the ranks.

Other online New Jersey reward programs tie into similar land-based rewards programs: MGM Resorts’ M life Rewards program through the Borgata, the Trop Advantage program through the Tropicana, and the Momentum Rewards Program through the Mohegan Sun.

Of course, if you prefer the more traditional online casino style of receiving cash back bonuses, that option is on the table as well. Most of these online loyalty programs let you convert your earned rewards credits directly into cash deposited back into your account, something that you’ll never see at land-based casinos!

An Overview of the New Jersey Online Casinos

Right now, there are 24 total online casino and poker room sites in the state of New Jersey. The five gaming companies that run them are Borgata, Caesars Entertainment, Golden Nugget, Resorts Casino and the Tropicana. Each property is allowed to run more than one site, and they each are responsible for anywhere from two to nine through various licensing agreements.

Borgata plays host to the most online casinos in New Jersey. They run their own casino and poker sites, and are also partnered with several other companies who run sites through their servers: MGM, PartyPoker, Pala Casino and Scores Casino.

Caesars Entertainment offers both Caesars and Harrah’s Casino, as well as the official World Series of Poker site. They have also partnered with 888 to make their casino and poker sites available in New Jersey.

Golden Nugget offers their own casino and poker rooms, and also has a partnership with Betfair, the UK’s largest betting exchange company. Betfair presently offers remote wagering on horse races, and may expand to offer full sportsbook services in the near future pending the results of a court case. Golden Nugget also hosts the online wagering site for Philadelphia’s SugarHouse Casino.

Resorts Casino offers their own casino site, and additionally has partnered with Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun casino and the PokerStars online poker room.

Tropicana hosts their own online gaming site, and has also partnered with Virgin America.

New Online Casinos in New Jersey

The state has left open the possibility of adding new online casinos in the future.

Hard Rock purchased the closed Trump Taj Mahal last year and is expected to re-open it under their brand at some point in 2018. They also recently announced that they have partnered with Gaming Innovation Group to create a Hard Rock online casino available only in New Jersey. This will be Hard Rock’s first-ever venture into the online gaming space.

Either the Hard Rock or new player Ocean Resort Casino will likely be the next to offer a new online casino in New Jersey, with one (or both) expected to be operational by mid-2018. Ocean Resort Casino is a new property going in on the grounds of the former Revel Casino. The owners of Ocean Resort have already announced a partnership with experienced online gaming developer GameAccount Network to bring their new online New Jersey casino to life. Ocean Resort does not yet have a scheduled date for the opening of the land-based casino, but an online site with real wagering could conceivably launch before the property opens its doors locally.

What Kinds of Games are Available?

New Jersey’s online casinos offer the full range of games available on casino floors in Atlantic City. The same gambling rules and regulations apply both online and offline, so if a game is legal on a casino floor, it’s also legal for an online version of it to be created.

The one big exception at the moment is sports betting. The right to offer sports betting in New Jersey is currently being decided by the Supreme Court. The case centers around the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which went into law in 1992. This law prevented any more states from being able to legalize sports wagering when it was introduced. At the time, only four states — Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana — had legalized sports betting, so they remain the only places where it is available (with the exception of Oregon, which has voluntarily stopped allowing it).

That will all change if the PASPA is struck down by the Supreme Court. Expect all of the New Jersey casinos to have online sportsbooks ready and waiting to launch just as soon as it is legal to do so. The verdict is expected by the summer of 2018.

Some New Jersey casinos presently have a legal sports betting product called “virtual sports.” These allow players to bet on a simulation of horse, greyhound or auto racing. These are technically in compliance with the law, as no actual sporting event is taking place. Most of these simply display preliminary information and results of the simulated match, rather than actually creating a visual representation of it.

New Jersey Casino Bonuses

One of the biggest advantages of playing online is the unique and valuable bonus offers that can’t be matched by anything on a brick and mortar casino floor.

New Jersey casinos offer the best of both worlds: the opportunity to earn comps at a land-based property if you so desire, but also the excellent online-only bonus types.

At these online casinos you’ll find things like deposit matching bonuses, welcome bonuses, reload bonuses and email offers. Let’s take a closer look at each of New Jersey’s online casinos to see what they offer.

Tropicana Casino

Tropicana’s online casino will rebate up to $100 in losses during your first seven days of play there. Unlike some similar rebate promotions at land-based casinos, this one is not divided up into confusing time periods. Tropicana simply refunds up to $100 of net loss on your first seven days of play.

Virgin Casino

Since they’re both administered by the Tropicana, Virgin’s online casino offers the same $100 rebate program that the Tropicana’s own online casino has. Virgin throws in the kicker of a $20 no deposit bonus for new players if you use the code 20BUCKS when signing up, however.

Borgata Casino

Borgata Casino offers $20 in Bonus Dollars (free play) to all new players, no strings attached. They will also match 100% of your initial deposit up to a cap of $600 Bonus Dollars. Players have 14 days from account creation to use their bonus funds and meet the wagering requirement to cash out, which is equal to the amount of Bonus Dollars they receive. Both of these offers are available until the end of 2018.

Borgata also sometimes offers temporary code promotions that add more free Bonus Dollars to new accounts, so keep an eye out for those.

Borgata Poker

Borgata’s poker room is offering the same welcome matching bonus that the casino offers — 100% up to $600. The way the bonus is released to you is a little different, however. Bonus money is added to your account in increments of $2 for every eight iRewards Points you earn (in other words, you’ll get $2 in free play back out of your bonus amount for every $4 you are charged either from the rake or for tournament fees).

You’ll need to enter the code BONUS600 when signing up to be eligible, and this offer is also good until the end of 2018.

New Jersey PartyPoker

PartyPoker will double the initial bonus of any new player, up to a total of $1,000. As with most poker bonuses, you’ll release the bonus funds gradually by earning rewards points as you play. The ratio is basically similar to Borgata Poker’s setup, but you can release bonus increments more quickly here at a rate of $1 for every four points earned (or $2 paid in fees).

PartyPoker also offers a free $25 to new players, but that isn’t all available at the poker table. You get $10 for poker, $10 for their selection of slots and casino games, and a free $5 toward a tournament entry.

Once you start playing here, you can also make use of various weekly offers like a bonus if you reload on a specific weekday, 10% cash back on Saturdays and a free “instant win” scratch card on Sundays.

Pala Bingo

New players at Pala Bingo receive both a deposit match and a no-deposit bonus. 100% of your first deposit is matched up to $100, and you’ll also get 150 free bingo tickets with a minimum deposit of $10.

Pala Casino and Pala Poker

Pala Casino and Pala Poker’s welcome packages includes $5 in cash, $5 in free play, $10 in poker tournament entries and $15 in Bingo Bucks (which can be used to purchase up to 150 tickets). New players also get a free spin on the Pala Casino Million Dollar Slot Machine, which guarantees a minimum win of at least another $5 in free play.

Play MGM

All new players at Play MGM get $25 in free play for signing up, though you’ll need to earn 150 iRewards points to make use of it. You’ll also get a 100% matching bonus up to $1,000 on your first deposit, though there is also a playthrough requirement here (you need to wager six times the bonus amount).

Play MGM Poker

Play MGM Poker offers new players $10 in free play at the tables and $15 that can be put toward tournament entries. They also offer the same matching bonus that is available at the Play MGM casino site, 100% up to a maximum of $1,000. Your matching bonus funds will be released in increments of 10% when you earn 20x that amount in rewards points.

Scores Casino

Scores Casino offers the same welcome package available at Pala Poker and Casino, but with the addition of a matching bonus of 100% on your first deposit (up to $500).

Caesars and Harrah’s Casino

Caesars two online properties in New Jersey both offer new players $10 in free play for slots. There is no wagering requirement to withdraw winnings, but it is restricted only to slots, it cannot be used for video poker or blackjack.

You can also take advantage of a 100% matching welcome bonus on your first deposit, up to a maximum of $300.

WSOP.com

The World Series of Poker site offers its own unique initial deposit matching bonus: your first deposit amount of up to $400 is matched 100% with free play that is released gradually as you earn Action Club (loyalty) points. You’ll also get seven free entry tickets to the nightly $100 freeroll tournaments that can be used during your first week of play.

888.com

888 Casino offers you $20 for free that is spread between their poker room and their casino site. The free $20 from 888 is broken up into $10 of free play at select casino games, $6 in tournament entry tickets for the poker room, and a flexible $4 of free play that can be applied either to casino games or poker.

Golden Nugget Casino

The Golden Nugget has a 100% initial deposit match bonus that is good for up to $1,000. You’ll get this bonus with a minimum first deposit of $30. There is a 10x wagering requirement to collect any winnings from the bonus funds.

BetFair

BetFair offers you a free $10 to play with just for creating a new account. There is no wagering requirement, and you can use it at any of their casino games.

You can also opt into a 100% matching bonus on your initial deposit up to a total of $2,500, the highest amount currently offered in New Jersey. It is important to note there is a wagering requirement of 20x, however.

SugarHouse Casino

New signups at SugarHouse receive anywhere from $10 to $20 in free play with no strings attached. The amount is determined by the spin of a wheel.

Also, during your first day of membership, every five rewards points earned while playing will net you an additional $10 in free play (up to a maximum of $300).

Naturally, SugarHouse also offers an initial deposit matching bonus. You can get a 100% match on any amount up to $100, with only a 1x wagering requirement to withdraw your winnings from bonus funds. Note that you’ll have to enter the code “100MATCH” when signing up to be eligible for the deposit bonus, however.

Resorts Casino

Resorts Casino offers a new player matching bonus of 100% on deposits up to $1,000. Wagering requirements vary by game, with the lowest amount for slots play.

Mohegan Sun

Mohegan Sun has two bonus offers for new players. The primary offer is a free $20 just for creating a new account. The bonus can be used at any type of game, but there are wagering requirements that vary by game.

There is also a first deposit matching bonus of 100% up to a maximum of $1,000. The bonus funds must be played within 30 days and there are wagering requirements that vary by game.

PokerStars

PokerStars offers a 100% initial deposit matching bonus up to a total of $600. What’s interesting about this one is that it’s good for 60 days from the activation of your new account, and if you don’t use the maximum amount on your first deposit, you are also eligible to match your second and third deposits during that time until you hit the $600 cap.
